FRESHMEN

Choosing a Faculty Adviser for your Sophomore Year: After spring break you will receive an email that instructs you to select a member of the faculty to be your adviser during your sophomore year. You may remember at your registration meeting in January I encouraged you to try to get to know a member of the faculty this term. I you want advice on how to get to know a member of the faculty, I am happy to help you.

I think it is important to select an adviser with whom you feel comfortable in order to discuss seriously your course selections and your education in general. Most members of the faculty are happy to serve as advisers during your sophomore year. You may choose to continue with your freshman adviser (if he or she is a member of the Yale College faculty or an associate or assistant dean in Yale College), approach the instructor of a course you completed this year, or consult with a faculty fellow of your college who teaches in a department that interests you. If you plan to major in the sciences, engineering, or mathematics, it is best to ask the appropriate director of undergraduate studies or designated departmental representative to be your sophomore year adviser. If you have difficulty choosing a faculty member to be your adviser, I will be happy to suggest possible advisers.

SENIORS

A Summer Opportunity for Yale Seniors interested in law, art, history sociology, criminology, museum studies, or archaeology to earn a MA-level certificate: The Association for Research into Crimes against Art (ARCA) invites applications for its 2012 Master’s Certificate Program in the study of art crime and cultural heritage protection. The 10-week ARCA Program, which takes place in Amelia, Italy, is taught by a select group of internationally recognized experts and provides participants with an interdisciplinary view into the secret world of stolen art and art security. Scholarship aid is available. For further info: www.artcrime.info. There is also an internship opportunity listed with Career Services.

TUTORING

Writing Partners at the Writing Center: Drop-in tutoring with writing partners Sunday – Thursday: 3-5 pm and 7-9 pm Friday: 3-5 pm www.yale.edu/bass/tutoring/partners. Writing Partners are Yale College or graduate school students selected for both their writing skills and their ability to talk about writing. Writing partners do not read papers before the appointment, so they will often focus on the beginning of your text or other short sections that you know need help. Still, since many writing problems show up in the first two pages of a paper, this kind of tutoring can be very effective.

Tutoring in Foreign Languages: The process for asking for a foreign language tutor is described at www.cls.yale.edu/tutoring. A tutor is available to anyone enrolled in a foreign language (regardless of the grade in that course).

Individually Assigned Tutors for QR and Science Courses: This tutoring is also free of charge. The form to request a tutor is in the TC dean’s office.

Tutoring in Departments: Sometimes departments offer tutoring, individually or in groups. Check with your instructor or in the office of Director of Undergraduate Studies.

Course-Based Peer Tutors: Ask your instructor if a Course-Based Tutor is available in your QR of Sc course. These tutors are available in addition to the other resources (such as faculty and Teaching Fellows) associated with the course. The Course-Based Peer Tutors are undergraduates who, in most cases, will have previously taken the course. Course-Based Peer Tutors attend lectures and are available to students in the course for one-on-one and small group tutoring. These Tutors are overseen by the course instructor.

The duration of internships will be eight weeks, and Art Museum Summer Scholar Interns will receive a stipend of up to $3,500. At least one of the four internships is to be held at the Yale University Art Gallery and one at the Yale Center for British Art.
The Education Department seeks an intern with wide-ranging interests in art and excellent research skills to identify and organize these resources. The project will involve investigating books, electronic databases, and curatorial files to find materials appropriate for the new library’s potential patrons, including high school and community college students, and the general public interested in art. This is an opportunity to learn about the broad range of the Gallery’s collection and to contribute to an important new aspect of the Gallery’s public educational outreach.

Print Sources for Ceramics

The Department of American Decorative Arts seeks an intern to research the sources for images printed on British ceramics in the Art Gallery’s collection. We seek a student to identify the print sources for the ceramics in the Gallery’s collection, using the numerous books that have been published on this subject, and to determine if the source materials exist in Yale’s print collections. The findings will also help to assign more accurate dates and manufacturer information to create better object records. This internship offers the possibility to explore a rich but under-researched part of the collection.

Works of Art Pertaining to World War I

The year 2014 will mark a century since the beginning of World War I. The anniversary will be commemorated at Yale, but the exact form of commemoration and the role of the Gallery have yet to be defined. The Department of Prints, Drawings, and Photographs at the Yale Art Gallery owns over sixty works that specifically refer to the war, and two collections, including one of posters, that are privately owned at present but may soon become a part of the collection at Yale. This project would involve studying and cataloguing these works, laying the groundwork for their inclusion in an exhibition.

Directors of undergraduate studies and designated departmental representatives are especially valuable as advisers. If you have difficulty finding a faculty member to be your adviser, I will be happy to suggest possible advisers.

The Yale Instructional Technology Group announces Wires Crossed, a student-led initiative about edtech at Yale. The group is curious about how emerging technologies might change the way Yale students learn. Would you take an online-only Yale seminar for credit? What if ConLaw textbooks were replaced with a media-rich app? Are finals and reading responses the best way to prove mastery in a course? ITG hopes to better understand what it can do to meet the needs of Yale students. You can follow the project on the Wires Crossed blog and Twitter, and contribute your own ideas.

(Martin Luther King Day). Monday, January 16. Classes do not meet on Martin Luther King Day. Monday classes meet on Friday this week instead of Monday, January 16.

Course Schedule Deadlines:

Class of 2015 Wednesday, January 18, 5 pm
Classes of 2014 Thursday, January 19, 5 pm
Class of 2013 Thursday, January 19, 5 pm
Class of 2012 Friday, January 20, 5 pm

- Schedules are handed in to the TC Dean’s Office.

- The deadline is strictly enforced.

- A late schedule incurs a fine of $50.

- A late schedule cannot elect any courses CR/D/Fail.

- Clerical Error on schedule: $50

A schedule of 3 or 3.5 course credits and a schedule of 6 or 6.5 course credits needs my permission before the schedule is handed in. Schedule an appointment to see me (see above).

On-line Course Selection: www.yale.edu/sis

1. Use the worksheet capabilities to search courses to shop during shopping period.
2. After you have settled on the courses you will take, print your final schedule.
3. Take the final schedule to your adviser for the signature. Sign the schedule.
4. Hand in your signed schedule to the TC Dean’s Office by the deadline for your class.

I remind you that (1) the program does not check for conflicts in class meeting times (that is the student’s responsibility – see “overlapping meeting times” above) and that (2) once you print your final schedule, you cannot reenter the program to make changes and print a different final schedule. Including or removing a course (after meeting with your adviser, for instance) must be hand written on the printed final schedule itself (in the Include and Remove Sections), and each change must be initialed by your adviser or me before the deadline for handing in your schedule.

Changes in Classes and their Meeting Times and Places: Course changes and courses added or deleted since the publication of the Blue Book are recorded on line at OCS. The on line list of courses is the most current one, updated as needed.

Overlapping Class Meeting Times: Class meeting times may not overlap by more than 15 minutes once a week. Required are a conversation with me, compelling academic reasons for the overlap, and with my assistance a petition to the Committee on Honors and Academic Standing.

A schedule with a course in The Graduate School of Arts and Sciences (and also not listed in the Blue Book) or a professional school requires an additional form, which is available in the TC Dean’s Office and at www.yale.edu/sfas/registrar/blue_form.pdf. Hand in the completed form with the syllabus attached by the deadline for your course schedule. [Note: SOM courses cannot be added to your schedule through OCS; they must be written by hand in the “include” section on your schedule. The form (above) for those SOM courses must be handed in to my office in the first week of shopping period, well before the deadline for your course schedule.]

Courses at the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences and at a professional school cannot elect the CR/D/Fail option.

Credit for these courses on your transcript: When you put a Graduate or Professional School course on your schedule, zero (0) course credits are recorded for the course until you hand in to my office the form for graduate school courses (syllabus attached) and the registrar’s office determines the course credits for that course after that. Some courses earn 1 course credit in Yale College and some earn .5 course credits (most commonly in SOM and EPH).

Independents Studies (Directed Reading, Directed Research, etc. as listed by most departments): There are limits on the number that a student can enroll in during a given year and over four years. See YCPS (Blue Book) page 41, paragraph 4.

Deadline to apply for a Spring-Term Leave of Absence: Wednesday, January 18, 5 PM. See me if you are thinking about applying for a leave of absence for this term.
