New Funding Opportunity for Student Projects in Global Health

Global Health Initiative: Yale-Collaborative Action Project (Y-CAP)

The Yale Global Health Initiative (GHI) invites applications to the new Yale-Collaborative Action Project (Y-CAP) award supported by the Maureen and Antoine Chiquet Fund for Global Health to enable scholarly endeavors for teams of Yale students working in the field of global health. Funded projects bring together students from different disciplines to address challenging problems affecting the health of disadvantaged populations globally, with a preference for Africa. Teams will be composed of 3-5 students and the maximum award amount per team is $15,000. It is strongly encouraged that student members of the team also seek individual funding support for the component of the project that they will take the lead on.

Y-CAP funds support proposals with the following attributes:

1) Multidisciplinary teams of 3-5 students representing at least two disciplines (e.g., biology, anthropology).

2) Proposed projects should identify a health problem of global importance (as evidenced by published literature) and develop a scholarly and ethically rigorous proposal to address it. Student projects may be in a variety of areas, such as research, practice, advocacy, or policy and management.

3) Preference will be given to projects based in Africa.

4) Proposed projects should make a clear and convincing case as to why the two (or more) disciplines are represented on the team and what unique contribution (e.g., methodological, analytical, etc.) each discipline makes to the project.

5) Mixed graduate-undergraduate team is preferred (e.g., 1 MPH and 2 undergraduates from two disciplines). At least one team member must be a Yale College student.

6) Each student must be supported by a faculty advisor who should also represent their discipline.

Fieldwork for the Yale-Collaborative Action Project must take place during the summer. Upon return, each student team is expected to present their work within and outside of the Yale community.

Application Information

This Award has a two step application process.

Each student team must first submit a “Letter of Intent” (LOI) that includes:

a) Brief project description (1 page maximum), include potential site of the project

b) List of potential Yale faculty mentors

c) List of each student and their anticipated contribution to and role with the project.

d) Resume, list of relevant coursework or prior experience for each student.

A limited number of LOIs proposed by student teams will be selected and invited to submit full proposals.

Letter of Intent (Required): Feb 1, 2012

Full Proposal Submission Deadline: Feb 23, 2012
